Best Homemade Cinnamon Sugar Sticks For Dessert

In my house, holiday season is a synonym for pie season. Making pie, eating pie, trying out new pie recipes - we do it all. But this year we noticed that no matter how hard we tried, there was always some extra pie dough lying around. So instead of just throwing it away, we decided to try to make something out of it. The result - these flakey and delicious cinnamon sugar sticks. They are super easy to make, and go great with coffee! And if you want to skip the pie making, and just go straight for the sticks, we promise not to judge you.

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2/3 cup + 1 tbs cold shortening
  • 3 tbs cold water
  • 3 tbs cold milk

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp water
  • 2 tbs granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt and sugar with a light whisk.
  3. Add the shortening. With a dough blender or your hands, work the shortening into the dry ingredients until it is in pea-size pieces.
  4. Add cold water and milk 1 tablespoon at a time, tossing with fork until all flour is moistened and the dough comes together.
  5. Gather dough into a ball and then shape it into a flattened round on a floured surface.
  6. Roll out dough to 1/8" thick and use a pastry wheel cut out strips 4" long x 1" wide.
  7. In a small bowl combine cinnamon and sugar.
  8. In another small bowl, lightly whisk egg and water. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush egg wash on each strip.
  9. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar mixture on each strip.
  10. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.
