doughnuts in the district

Washington DC is an awesome city. I know I am a little bias because I lived there for four years while going to school, but I just think it is such a cool place. Even if you are not into politics (which I am not) there is something there for everyone. Basically, Washington DC will always have a place in my heart - so I was stoked when I found out there was a DC shop on our National Doughnut Tour.

Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken is in the heart of downtown DC. It is small, and a little cramped, but the stuff coming out of this shop is so good, the customers don't seem to mind. Their Creme Brülée Doughnut won the Washington Posts's Doughnut Wars Competition, and the shop itself has been featured on the Food Network as one of the best places in the country to get doughnuts. Not too bad for a two year old shop. Lauten and I showed up 5 minutes before opening on a chilly Sunday morning, and there were already people waiting outside. Obviously, we were in the right place. Astro only has four everyday doughnut flavors, while the rest are based on seasonal ingredients or just whatever the chef is feeling that month. We obviously got them all. Check out the rest of the pictures and the full review on Unfortunately we were too early for the fried chicken, but it is always nice to have something to look forward to for the next time I am in DC.

Lindsay Nathanson - Baker and Author

I might be the only person in the history of the world that has ever been grounded from baking. That's right. When I was a teen, it wasn't the computer, or the phone or the tv that got taken away. For me, it was the unsalted butter.
