The first time I heard Taylor Swift, I was a junior in high school. “Our Song” was playing all over the radio, and I thought it was pretty great – so I decided to play it for my boyfriend. I said “What do you think of this new song?” and he responded plainly with “I think it’s stupid.”
I don’t know why I remember this so vividly, because it is really an insignificant detail about my relationship and my life…but I do. Maybe it was because not too long after this incident, I realized he was the one that was stupid. Or that deep down I knew I could never date someone that was not on board with my quirky music choices. Who knows. But it is something that has stayed with me over the years.
Obviously I ignored him and kept listening to it…and continued to listen to her as she worked her way up the charts and became one of the biggest pop stars in the world. And now, almost 10 years later, I know my ex-boyfriend is jamming to Taylor Swift in his car. I would bet my life on it.
But this cake is not based on that first song, but a new one from her most recent 1989 album. This cake was inspired by “Out of the Woods”, which happens to be my favorite track on the album.
The night we couldn’t quite forget
When we decided (we decided)
To move the furniture so we could dance,
Baby, like we stood a chance
Two paper airplanes flying, flying, flying
And I remember thinkin’
Something about this song really gets me. I have been shamelessly blasting it in my car for the last few months, and it just never gets old.
