watercolor cake with washi tape flag toppers

This was my very first attempt at the buttercream watercolor technique. In the past, I have relied on fondant and petal dust to create a watercolor look, but this new buttercream trend intrigued me.

I think for a first attempt, it turned out pretty well. But like all things in life...practice makes perfect. And because I am a perfectionist..I like things to be perfect. So I foresee a lot of buttercream watercolor cakes in my future.

However, this was not my first time working with washi tape. I am pretty obsessed with washi tape. I use it on everything. I even have a roll in my makeup bag for when I travel...just in case. You never know when you are going to need some emergency washi tape, right?

Washi tape is relatively new product in the US - but the crafting world has welcomed it with open arms. There are countless DIY posts, tutorials and even entire books (one of which I own) on all the things you can do with washi tape.

Basically, it is awesome - and it comes in every color or pattern you could ever imagine. So if you have not experienced the wonderfulness that is washi tape, go ahead and do yourself a favor - buy some.

Lindsay Nathanson - Baker and Author

I might be the only person in the history of the world that has ever been grounded from baking. That's right. When I was a teen, it wasn't the computer, or the phone or the tv that got taken away. For me, it was the unsalted butter.
